What Goes Into a Dissertation Methodology Chapter
The methodology chapter is where most committee pushback happens — not because the topic is unclear, but because a required section is thin, or a choice isn't justified. Here's what a complete chapter actually needs.
Research design and rationale
State your design (e.g., quantitative experimental, qualitative phenomenological, mixed methods) and justify why it fits your research question — not just describe what the design is. Committees look for the connection between question and design, not a textbook definition.
Population and sampling
Define your target population, sampling strategy, and sample size — with justification. For quantitative studies, this usually means a power analysis. For qualitative studies, it means a defensible rationale for how many participants is enough for the design you've chosen.
Instruments or data sources
Describe exactly what you're using to collect data — a validated survey instrument, an interview protocol, existing records, or something you've developed yourself. If you developed or adapted an instrument, this section needs to address its validity and reliability.
Procedure
A step-by-step account of how data collection actually happened (or will happen): recruitment, consent, data collection sessions, and timeline. This section should be detailed enough that another researcher could replicate it.
Data analysis plan
Specify exactly which statistical tests or qualitative analysis approach you're using, and why they fit your research questions and data type. Vague language here ("data will be analyzed using appropriate statistical methods") is one of the most common reasons committees send a chapter back.
Rigor, validity, and ethics
Quantitative chapters typically address validity and reliability; qualitative chapters address trustworthiness (credibility, transferability, dependability, confirmability). Every chapter needs an ethics section covering IRB approval, informed consent, and confidentiality protections.
Where this actually goes wrong
Most methodology chapter revisions come from one of three places: a data analysis plan that's too vague to actually execute, a sampling justification that doesn't hold up to a power analysis, or an instrument's validity/reliability that isn't addressed at all. Catching these before your defense saves a full revision cycle.
